Cocoa Fl

We are pulling up anchor this morning and continuing our journey south. We spent a lovely day yesterday with my father. He arrived about 10:00 bearing a valuable gift for cruisers, the daily paper. The weather was warm and sunny but the opportunity to sail was as small as the numbers on the anemometer. After giving Dad the grand tour (that took about 10 minutes) we headed out for a putter along the ICW. We retraced a few miles from yesterday up to the bridge in the canal. We enjoyed a lunch of chicken wraps and cookies with past their prime apples.

We returned to the marina for an opportunity to walk through the downtown area of Cocoa. We entered a fabulous hardware store built in the 1800’s. S.F. Travis.I think it still had much of the original stock and had just kept adding through the years. In order to accommodate the inventory they constructed additions to the building resulting in a rabbit warren of rooms and corridors. Perhaps it would be fun to go back and do some more exploring. We stopped for a wonderful ice cream, while we sat in the shade and people watched. The city of Cocoa is trying hard to create a trendy and upscale area that will appeal to tourists and are beginning to see results. Unfortunately basic things like a grocery store were not within walking distance.
The Cocoa Bay Marina was actually a condo development for boats. Each slip was purchased for more than $100,000. The slips were sub-let to transients while the owners were off cruising. The facilities were beautiful with marble washrooms and large laundry facilities. The only thing missing was a fuel dock. In the evening it was fun to watch the small fish feeding on the bioluminescent algae. It made the harbour twinkle with lights. Unfortunately that same algae just looked like dirty sludge in the the daytime and was present throughout that area of the ICW.

After walking my father back to the car late in the afternoon, and saying goodbye, we cast off and headed out to an anchorage for a quiet night’s sleep with a comfortable breeze.
