Warnemunde

What we didn’t realize was that this was the final day of the biggest festival of the year in Warnemunde. A tall ships festival was winding up. Being a beautiful Sunday, I think half the population was out in their boats, add to that some huge tall ships trying to get in and out of the harbour, Ferries the size of cruise ships and actual cruise ships coming and going and you have total chaos. That’s fun when you are in an unfamiliar harbour. Mostly I was too busy to take pictures.

We are tied up at the local sailing club which has a few spaces for visitors. Located right in the middle of town it is an easy walk to the promenade, the beach and the supermarket. Standing on the bridge into town on the left, Voila is about halfway up the right. This picture makes this canal look much larger than it actually is. The tour boats on the left turn around here and nearly touch on both ends.

The excitement for the morning included moving Voila over a spot and a half to watch the club use the crane to haul out a fleet of Swiss J70s that had been racing.

As we wandered around we enjoyed German sausages in buns and later a soft ice cream. This is a charming beachside holiday town with old captains houses and remnants of a fishing village.

Beachside attractions included this observation tower/ disused lighthouse.

If you get tired, you can rent a bed.

Lots of people enjoying the sun and water sports.

One of the things we have discovered is that wifi is scarce and unreliable. When we asked about chips for our phones – even on a pay as you go plan – was that as of July 1st this year, it is required that you have a German identity card to buy cell/ internet service. We have a little time left on our British and Netherlands cards so we will use those sparingly until we return to the Netherlands and then the UK.

Our expensive and slow internet last night included tasty pizzas.
