Horta

The ARC Europe Rally left Horta on Sunday for Terciera and points west. We have decided to stay and enjoy Horta until we get good weather to head North. We will certainly miss the friends we have made in the last 6 weeks but it was the right decision for us. There are still a couple of other rally boats here and we have been getting to know some of the other international crews. This is a very busy place in the spring and fall as boats are on the move. We have a French boat on one side of us and a British boat on the other side. The boats are rafted 4 and 5 deep to fit everyone in We are hoping not to get squished as the low (story weather) comes through this week. There are 2 50’+ boats rafted outside of us

Can you see Voila?

I spent this morning contributing to the lore that is Horta. Many famous and infamous sailors have been through here, along with thousands of everyday cruisers like us. Each crew is encouraged to paint a sign commemorating their visit. The story goes that it brings good luck. This huge marina is surrounded by these signs on every available surface.

Not being much of an artist, I made stencils to help with the design. The first job is to find an available spot. Essentially you need to find somewhere that the previous artwork has faded beyond recognition. That done we painted a background, and let it dry.
