Settling in

We are finally developing a routine. We are  getting some of the smaller jobs done, doing more fall cleaning and planning the bigger projects. Yesterday was a day of errands. We headed back to Indiantown to pick up a head part that we crossed in transit. Then it was on to Jupiter to a place called The Teak Deck. It was fascinating to see how teak decks are built these days. There are no screws or plugs. The entire deck is created in the shop from plans and jigs. Strips of teak are joined together with very flexible caulking, run through a sander/planer and then cut to shape. There is still a lot of custom cutting  and inserts to do to work around the variety of shapes, hatches, holes and other misc. details. Unfortunately we are not having a new deck applied to Voila!. We are going to attempt to repair the current deck. It will involve removing much of the caulking, lifting many of the planks to glue them back down, screwing the boards down, inserting plugs over the screws, recaulking and sanding. Definitely the biggest job of the season. We bought 12 tubes of caulking to get the job started.

Then it was off to a couple of marine stores to pick up a few things. We bought a traditional clock and barometer for the bulkhead and more docking line at West Marine, and a Dora the Explorer lifejacket and a water pump at Chapman’s. It was then on the Walmart for some odds and ends. This included a new battery for my watch. Not only could I not tell time but I couldn’t believe how much I missed the Indiglow feature. Boats are dark at night and there is no clock radio sitting on the dresser.

Today I organized the chart table / desk and put all of the electronics/cables in labelled accessible bags. Alan installed the freshwater pump for the galley but unfortunately there is still an issue or two with it turning on and off at unexpected times. This is how we read the information on some of the parts that are inaccessible. This view was upside down. This is the wash down pump.

Tonight was a boat version of Chicken Cacciatore for supper. It is difficult to get enthusiastic about cooking dinner as I am still adjusting to the cabin temp being about 32’Canadian before I start supper.
